Since You've Been Gone...

As we were preparing to go out somewhere, KT and I got to watch Kelly Clarkson's newest video and I have to say that it was awesome. Yeah, Kelly is actually becoming an American Idol. She's growing up, professionally. I think that Kelly is still the best of all the other AI's.

"Since You've Been Gone"

Here's the thing we started off friends
It was cool but it was all pretend
Yeah yeah
Since you've been gone

You dedicated you took the time
Wasn't long till I called you mine
Yeah Yeah
Since you've been gone

And all you'd ever hear me say
Is how I pictured me with you
That's all you'd ever hear me say

But since you've been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
What I want
Since you've been gone

How can I put it? you put me on
I even fell for that stupid love song
Yeah yeah
Since you've been gone

How come I'd never hear you say
I just wanna be with you
I guess you never felt that way

But since you've been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
I get what I want
Since you've been gone

You had your chance you blew it
Out of sight, out of mind
Shut your mouth I just can't take it
Again and again and again and again

Since you've been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get
I get what I want
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get (I get)
You should know (you should know)
That I get
I get what I want
Since you've been gone
Since you've been gone
Since you've been gone

Fockers and Columbine...

Yeah, I know...I haven't blogged for a few days. Just haven't really been in the mood to sit down and blogged. And my emails as well. Oh well...

Last Saturday, a group of us Deafies meet at the new movie theatre in Chinatown to watch Meet the Fockers. Hilarious movie! Although, I'd have to say that Meet the Parents is still funnier of the two.

Ever since KT and I watched Roger and Me, by Michael Moore, for class, we decided that we wanted to watch his other documentaries. So, we got to see Bowling for Columbine. Very interesting documentary, which was filled with a lot of stuff that had KT and I discussing various topics throughout the movie. If you haven't seen any of Moore's documentaries, I suggest that you'd check them out. We'll definitely be checking out the others.

Old and Gray...

This morning while walking from Gallaudet to NY Metro, KT mentioned about how I would be 31 this year and that I'd soon start complaining of my body aching here and there. I was thinking like..."gee, thanks for reminding me the joys of growing old".

Actually, I think it's funny. Not too long ago, I had a online conversation with Cliff and we were talking about aching in certain parts of our bodies and soon the increase of medicine intake. Cliff couldn't understand what was going on and I told him..."honey, you may be the youngest in the group but you're getting old too".

We're getting old. Some of us have already left the 20's age group and moved on into the 30's. The rest are soon exiting, including KT. Mwaahahaha! It really is amazing that we'll be witnessing ourselves and our friends and loved ones grow old.

Pretty soon we'll be complaining about our gassy stomachs, arthritic joints and predict the weather, wear glasses (if not already), drive slower, develop wrinkles, pop in some Viagra pills and everything that comes with growing old.

The other night at Cobalt, I was commenting that Toby and KT already have white hair in their head. For some people, they'd immediately run to CVS or Walgreen's and buy some dye to mask white hair. However, Toby and KT seem to pretty much accepted it and not wanna dye their heads. Manny and I were commenting how we both have found white hair in our goatees. Waaaah!

******************************

Life is funny. When we're young, we wished that we were older. Now that we're older, we wish we were younger. Can't make up our minds, eh?

******************************

I'm sure that when we were younger, we never really thought our parents were OLD. But as we grow up, we see our parents grow old.

I remember an episode on Roseanne. Roseanne was just really sassy with her mother and just couldn't figure out why. They finally sat down to talk it out. Roseanne commented that she had noticed in the past few days that her mother was getting old and it just registered in her mind and she said "...and you're dragging me with you!"

I never thought my mother as old. I think that was because she was young at heart. Plus, she was always positive about live and spewing little sayings like "be happy" or "life's too short to be angry" or "forgive quickly" or "smile!" and other stuff. Now, my dad...he's another story. Everytime I see him, his hair gets whiter and whiter. I also noticed that he's losing his hearing little by little. So, yeah, he's getting old...and cranky.

******************************

You ever read or write something and you're reminded of a song or a passage and it keeps playing over and over in your head? 'Old and Gray...' reminded me of a song by Amy Grant and it's just playing repeatedly in my head. Here's an excerpt (I believe from "I'll Be Waiting/The Prodigal"):

I'll be waiting
I may be young or old and gray
Counting the days
But I'll be waiting
And when I finally see you come
I'll run when I see you
I'll meet you

Reading Less, Playing More...

Hmmmph! On Friday, after school and dropping KT off to work, I came home and cleaned up our humble abode. We were gonna have a couple friends come over for dinner and enjoy my baked potato soup and perhaps play a couple games afterwards.

I usually can make this soup in under 2 hours because I just make enough for me and KT. However, it took me 4 hours to prepare. I didn't complain because I was enjoying the time I spent on preparing as well as cleaning and washing laundry.

KT got off work and I went to pick him up. Came home and finished up and soup and make some last minute cleaning and folded laundry and put them away.

You know how when you get home from work, you're just starving for a hearty dinner. Well, KT was hungry but I told him to wait til friends came by and we could all eat to our heart's content.

5 minutes passed by on the agreed time. Then, 10 minutes. I thought, typical of DST (Deaf Standard Time), which I'm sure does bother each of us from time to time. 15 minutes and I'm starting to worry if they're ok. 20 minutes and I'm peeking out the window every 10 seconds. 25 minutes and I'm testing the doorbell and the flashing light inside to make sure it worked. 30 minutes and I get a feeling that we're being stood up but go into denial mode and start cleaning some more. KT asked me how long did I expect to wait before we'd eat. I told him I'd wait an hour after the agreed time. 40 minutes later, I get a page from a friend of a friend that plans changed.

Geez! Thanks for telling me! All that time spent wasted. Well, not really, at least KT and I enjoyed the soup. Since I made so much, we're still having leftovers.

Yeah, I was upset and KT let me vented out my frustration. Then, KT did took me out bowling to get my mind off of things. We ended up having a great time. I love to go bowling and only wished we had done so more often. I think we will!

******************************

Saturday, we got together with Manny and stroll through the flea market at Eastern Market and bought various stuff.

Then, we met up with Toby for dinner at Guapo's in Tenleytown. It was my second time there and I should've stayed with the chicken quesdillas. I had chimichanga and it wasn't that great. Next time, I'll try the fajitas.

Afterwards, we went to Cobalt in Dupont Circle and had a good time.

******************************

Sunday, dropped off Manny at his place after spending the night at our's. Then, went to Kendall Apts to attend a kid's birthday party. Whoo, after watching the kids run around like crazy for an hour was enough for me.

I was supposed to go to a meeting afterwards but an email exchange (thread) prior led to some unnecessary pressures and thoughtlessness of others. I was afraid that if I showed up at the meeting I might lose my temper or do something unprofessional. So, I thought a month's break would do wonders for everyone, including me.

Came home and caught up on some readings for classes. Then, KT and I went out to Red Lobster's for an early Valentine's Day dinner.

KT and I work from 7:30 to 6:30 on Mondays and we knew that we would probably not be in the mood to go out and deal with the mass crowd and waiting time in restaurants. So, after work, we'll come home and enjoy a delicious meal.

Anyways, I had an ok weekend. I'm looking forward to a romantic evening with KT.

******************************

LOL! I was reading QueenAlpo's blog about communication between her and CK in regards to dinner. It's like you can have so many talk about communication and how to improve on it. Communication is improved and yet you find yourselves needing to working out some kinks. So those kinks solved and then more communication issues pop up. It's like....arrrghhhh...why can't we just have perfect communication?!?! Ah, such is life.

Modern Day Robin Hood?

Members of PETA had been burning fur coats or threw paint (usually red) at people who would wear them.

Now, they're doing something different. They're giving donated fur coats to the homeless. Their reason is that "we can't bring the lives of these animals back". I'm thinking...well, throwing paint at people who wear fur coats isn't gonna bring the animals back as well.

Another reason is that fur coat should provide warmth, not vanity, for the owners. Ah, so is that a subtle hint that it's ok to kill animals -- as long as it provides warmth?

Anyways, the homeless people are really loving the fur coats. One lady claimed that it's an "esteem booster". That doesn't sound like it is in reference to the warmth but about the fur coat (vanity). However, I'm not criticizing coats for the homeless. I'm all in favor for the homeless to stay warm during the harsh winters.

To me, seems that PETA is acting like Robin Hood. Bad to those who wear fur coats for vanity but turn around and give fur coats to the homeless.

Hmmm... *scratches head*

Legacy Left Behind...

From time to time, I'm reminded by others just how much my mother is missed by others as well as her influence, especially in our families.

Two nights ago, I got a suprise package from a longtime girlfriend of my cousin's. We've long since accepted her as a part of our familial circles. She was really thoughtful. She had remembered how my mother used to send me Mexican food and candies and other stuff, found only in Texas. Well, she sent me a little candle and two bags of Mexican candies. I was truly touched by that. It was also nice to get a little note from her.

That wasn't all. Included was a mail from one of my favorite aunts, Lucy. I just realized that the last time I saw her was the day we buried my mother. Actually, that was the last time I saw anyone from my family. Anyways, my aunt was telling me just how much my mother was missed. My mother was actually her best friend and just really miss being with her, especially hearing her laughter.

There were hints in the letter that our families have slowly become distant with each other. It just made me realize, again, that Mom was truly the glue that held us all together. Now, that glue is gone.

Anyways, it was nice to hear from my aunt. She even included a $20 dollarbill. She didn't have to do that. But, that's my aunt...always giving...just like my mother.

Ha ha. That last sentence above reminded me of a memory. Mom and I would often go visit my aunt Lucy and my cousins. And everytime we go out, like to the mall or to a restaurant or wherever, Lucy and Mom would "fight" over some money to compensate for gas usage. If Lucy was driving, Mom would give her a $20 and Lucy would refuse it. Mom would try to sneak it in her purse and Lucy would find it and throw it back to Mom. The same would be done if Mom was driving. They were always thoughtful. It came to the point where my cousins and I would imitate them in the backseats and we'd have Mom and Lucy laughing so hard.

Anyways, I know that all of us will never ever forget Mom because she is missed...sorely.

I'll have to send my aunt and my cousin's girlfriend a thank-you card.

Lemony News...

KT and I enjoyed watching Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events last night in Chinatown. I totally enjoyed the settings and props throughout this movie.

Of course, we all know that movies have a different version than the books. However, this particular version worked really well and loved how they added things here and there.

Jim Carrey did a wonderful job as Count Olaf. He was the perfect actor for this character. I believe that his experience with acting as such odd or bizarre characters like The Grinch, The Mask and Ace Ventura made him so good for Count Olaf. When I continue reading the Lemony Snicket series, I'll definitely have Jim Carrey in my mind when I come across Count Olaf.

******************************

What is going on?!? I'm talking about Bush's $2.57 trillon dollar budget proposal that will cut or close a lot of programs. The bulk of this money will go to the military and homeland security.

He says that "it's a budget that focuses on results". Yeah, we want results but will this proposal will actually bring results?!?!

******************************

Turning Down the Volume is an interesting article about HUGS at Gallaudet University. You'll need an account with Washington Post to view the article.

******************************

Banning of smoking in public places is starting to catch on...globally. Parts of the US have banned smoking in buildings and whatnots. Ireland has banned smoking in pubs, although it seems to not really be enforced. Now, Cuba has banned smoking in public places. Ah, the world will be a bit cleaner to breathe in some fresh air.

******************************
Gay marriage has been banned in Virginia. This is really sad to hear and yet, not surprising. Virgina was the last state to recognize interracial marriages. Anyways, opponents have compared the ban to Nazism.

We have a long hard battle to fight and we must persevere.

******************************

"Think Ink, Not Mink" Dennis Rodman has posed nude (sideways) in an ad for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). This ad has sparked talks among people, especially in the field of professional sports.

Mercedes-Benz, under pressure from PETA, is now offering leather-free options for seats, using fabric or synthetic leather.

A Couple More...

Die Mommie Die! is a movie that every queer should add to their DVD collection. It's a wonderful movie that just had KT and I laughing in some scenes. I cannot believe that I haven't watched this flick any sooner. Where was I?

Jason Priestly starred in this film. KT and I were sharing the fact that we were both gaga over him in Beverly Hills 90210, not Luke Perry. Eww!

Anyways, you gotta check out this cute flick!

Something the Lord Made was a wonderful movie. This is based on a true story about 2 men, a surgeon and his Black assistant, who made a mark in the history of heart surgery in the early 20th century.

All I can say is have a box of tissues ready towards the end of the movie. I loved it!

Ta ta for now...

KT and I will be heading over to the local theatre to watch Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Backstabbing...With Concern?

Maybe you care or don't give a rat's ass but do you ever wonder if your friends ever talk about you?

Someone once told me about this scenario: You're friends with A and B. You talk to A about B. Then, you talk to B about A. It's only natural that A and B will talk about you. Pretty much basic logic, eh?

I'm sure that you have friends that are just leading a totally fucked up life, filled with never-ending dramatic episodes (that you actually could create sitcom based on a particular friend's life) but you still love these guys. Yet, sometimes what they do drives you to the wall or spark some concerns that you just have to discuss with other friends to see if they are on the same level as you.

Of course, there are some friends that have their priorities aligned and lead a pretty productive life and therefore, doesn't warrant much "discussions" with your other friends.

Usually, I don't care what people say about me. Admittedly, I've had my moments where I've blown my top when I've been informed someone has been dragging my name through the mud. I guess that every now and then I'd wish I was a fly on the wall to see what friends say about me.

By the way, where do you differentiate backstabbing from sharing with concerns?

Discourse on Deaf Culture...

According to an email from Gallaudet University, Dr. I. King Jordan will appear on NPR today from 2 to 3pm, EST to discuss about Deaf culture in America. Padden and Humphries' book, "Inside Deaf Culture" will be discussed.

For a translated script of the show, you can email to TOTN@npr.org or to access real-time text, you can go to www.captionreporters.com.

I'm assuming this has to do with the recent criticism from a man (a hearie who obviously has had no interaction with the Deaf community) who has heavily criticized the Deaf culture.

Duty Calls...

Shit! Last night, I got home from work and checked the mailbox. Guess what? I got a summon for jury duty. Ugh!

Usually, I wouldn't have mind doing jury duty but it't just wrong timing. Graduate school (tons of readings/research/assignments) and work really take most of my time, with very little social life. I'm pretty sure work and school will be understanding about jury duty. But I like to stay on top of things and not get behind, especially with school.

I guess each state is different with jury duty. I remember when I got a summon in Texas, I was able to excuse myself because I was a full-time student. Maryland offered no such exemption. So, I have to go.

However, there is little hope that I might not have to go. I have to call the night before and see if my number has been called or not to come in for jury selection. So, I'm hoping my number won't be selected to come in.

*fingers crossed*
